Key Stage 3
The Physical Education curriculum at Lipson Co-operative Academy provides a common entitlement for all pupils aged 11-18 to experience a wide range of practical activities. The schemes of work have been designed to allow for sufficient flexibility for the Physical Education Department to teach inspirational, motivational and challenging lessons. All Key Stage Three students experience the 'Multi Skills' programme which focuses on the development of fundamental movement skills essential to both long term participation in physical activity and future athletic achievements.
This programme develops each student’s ability with regards to Agility, Stamina, Speed, Power, and Co-ordination in a challenging and structured way. In addition to the multi skills scheme of learning, students experience a wide range of sporting activities, such as Football, Rugby, Gymnastics, Hockey and Netball. In the summer term, greater emphasis is placed on athletic prowess alongside summer activities such as Cricket and Rounders.
Additionally, the concept of language for learning underpins all activities and the introduction of GCSE/BTEC examination terminology prepares our students for the BTEC qualification in Sport. Student led ‘Leadership’ is a component of our assessment criteria and works alongside our programme of study.
Key Stage 4
KS4 Exam Board
The Physical Education department provides students with the opportunity to study the BTEC First in Sport and Leadership. This provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to pursue a career in sport and recreation. The course has been one of the most successful at the school for many years, where students’ overall grades are very good as a result of high quality teaching and learning. The course involves students studying four units over the two years.
Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise (assessed by examination)
Unit 2: Practical Sport
Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness
Unit 6: Leadership in Sport
For Unit 2, 5 and 6, students are assessed by applying taught knowledge to complete a series of assignments in the form of coursework. The Level 2 BTEC is a valuable stepping stone for students who wish to progress to study the A 'level equivalent in the National Diploma in sport.
In addition, students also gain an additional leadership qualification which is a valuable addition to the course and is very successful in developing lifelong skills in communication, organisation and leadership. Our students are given the opportunity to develop these skills by leading on sports events for our feeder primary schools.
Key Stage 5
KS5 Exam Board
Students at Lipson Co-operative Academy have the opportunity to study our very successful BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. The course has a long and extensive history of excellent results where many of our students progress to study sport at university. Students at Lipson have the opportunity to study either the one, two or three A 'level equivalent Extended Diploma. Much like the key stage 4 version, students have exams in the core anatomy and physiology units, controlled tasks in psychology and nutrition, with all remaining units being assessed though coursework.
In addition, students who study the BTEC have the opportunity to participate in outdoor adventure activities alongside traditional practical sports. These include mountain biking, climbing, street surfing, canoeing, and moorland walking. Students also gain valuable work experience by developing their leadership further through the Community Sports Leaders Award (CLSA).
The BTEC National course enables students to progress into employment or onto further Education to study sports coaching and teaching, sport science, sports therapy, sports psychology and sports journalism.
