Headteacher's Blog 8th October 2021
I had the pleasure of ending last week by undertaking interviews for Head Boy and Girl in the 6th Form. The calibre of candidate was so high that we ended up creating an extra position of Executive Head Boy. This prestigious accolade went to Cherno Sumareh, with Rowan Barzingie securing Head Boy and Holly Nankivell, Head Girl. There is no doubt that these students have their work cut out with all the fantastic initiatives they have planned for the student body and I’m really excited to see these projects come to fruition.
This afternoon, I have the equally delightful task of interviewing the Year 11 candidates for the position of Head Boy and Girl and the all-important prefect positions. I am always blown away by how seriously our students take this responsibility and disseminate important decisions and ideas to the rest of the student body.
I really am in for a Friday treat today as I follow the interviews with a hot chocolate meeting with some amazing Year 8 students. Miss Geraghty has selected 8 students who she feels deserve special recognition for various different achievements such fund raising, hard work and resilience. This really is the highlight of my week, being able to sit and chat with these amazing individuals is truly humbling. What a fantastic job I have!
Tours for Year 5 and 6 prospective students continue to be very popular and are available up until half term. These seem to be attracting parents from areas of the city a little further afield who would not have naturally considered Lipson as an option for their child. The word really is getting out there about what a fantastic place Lipson is to be, with even greater improvements planned. Tours can be booked by contacting our reception.
It was delightful to see over 60 staff at a voluntary training session last night. The fast-paced improvement of the school is clearly seen and facilitated by the desire for staff to improve their practice and learn new strategies, all in their own time. This speaks wonders for the culture we are trying to create here. Our research group has some very exciting and high-profile guest speakers booked to come and speak to staff and share initiative working practice which can be used and targeted on a daily basis with our students.
As you are aware, we are on course to join the Ted Wragg Multi Academy Trust in January. On Tuesday we will hold a staff meeting and start a 4-week consultation period. A number of our faculties are already working closely with the trust and I am excited by opportunities this will offer Lipson, particularly with a leading role in the trust.
Finally, I would like to remind Year 8 parents that we will be holding a virtual Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 12th October. Please do take the time to meet with your child’s class teachers and this time with the convenience of doing it from home! Communication between school and home is vital in securing effective relationships and support for students.
I have once again recorded a short video updating you on all recent and upcoming events at Lipson, please click here to watch.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.
Very best wishes,
Martin Brook, Headteacher
