Principal's Blog 13th July 2018

As the school year nears its end, we have started our new timetable this week.  Students are able to use the last 2 weeks of term to get to grips with their new classes and teachers; enabling them to be ready and raring to go when they return to school in September.

We welcomed our new Year 12 students into school this week as they underwent the 6th form induction.  The transition from GCSE to 6th form study should not be underestimated, students are treated far more maturely and expected to learn in a more independent manner.  This can be very challenging and a steep learning curve for many.  The Induction Week is designed to give students the very best insight into expectations for next year.  Academic students are set summer tasks in the subjects they will study, helping to encourage them research over the summer holidays and prepare for 6th form education.  I wish them all the very best.

We held the 2nd of our uniform sizing evenings for our new Year 7 students and their parents’ week.  Once again the event was very well attended, giving our new students the opportunity to try on and order our business- like uniform. Staff at Lipson are very much looking forward to welcoming new Year 7 in September.

The Cooperative Big Band at Lipson put on the highest factor suntan lotion and travelled up to Tavistock to play in the 'Edge Festival' on Saturday the 7th of July.  We were allocated a 12.30 slot in the Guildhall Square Car Park which was a fabulous location due to the surrounding buildings acting as a natural amphitheatre. Our rhythm section quickly set up within the change-over time and the saxes and trumpets shifted the stands in to position. To say it was incredibly hot would be an understatement, however our students played amazingly well under adversity and the appreciative audience and 'gobsmacked' organiser (who has booked us for next year already!) really supported our performance enthusiastically. Well done to the students and Music department

With the unusual consistent hot weather we have been having recently, we have been reminding students in PE lessons to bring water bottles to ensure they keep hydrated and have reminded them of their responsibility in applying sun cream to ensure they can enjoy the sun safely.  A letter will be coming home from the PE department next week with a reminder of the correct kit for next academic year.

This will be my last blog as Mrs Budd returns from maternity leave on Monday.  I would like to thank all the students, parents and staff at Lipson for making me feel so very welcome in my time here.  I will never forget the friendly, family like feel of Lipson and it is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye.  You have a fantastic school and team of staff who I know will continue to flourish in providing an exemplary education and enrichment for the students.  I wish you all well for the future and will of course keep in touch with Mrs Budd and the team to find out how you are all getting on.

I wish you all a lovely weekend and summer break when it arrives.
