Principal's Blog 16th March 2018

It was nice to enjoy milder weather this week after all the excitement of the snow.

They say time flies when you are having fun and that is certainly the case at Lipson. I cannot believe we are the end of another busy week with Easter just around the corner.

I am always interested in what extra- curricular activities students are involved in outside of school and I was so impressed to hear about Ryan Griffiths in Year 7 Chandlers who took part in the Bath Duathlon on Saturday.  Ryan undertook a 1.5k run followed by a 7.5k bike ride, finishing with a 800 metre run.  Ryan completed this in 25:06 minutes, an outstanding achievement.  He should be very proud of himself.  As I certainly am.

This week we welcomed Dynamic Adventure to Lipson for the first time in 2018 - the first of many visits I'm sure! We had over thirty students completing the first round of their expedition route planning and finalised our teams for all expeditions. Students learnt various map skills and were able to see the location and terrain which they will cover during their practice expedition. Well done to all those who attended.

I was very interested to read the Evening Herald article last week about the amazing adventures our new Cover Supervisor Robby Roulston had encountered before coming to Lipson.  Robby spent two months at the start of this year in the virtually uninhabited, ice-covered continent of Antarctica, in constant day-light, carrying out work with the British Antarctica Survey (BAS).  Mr Roulston was part of the ICT team who went to Antarctica to bring Halley Research Station back into top working condition ready for the winter team.  This involved getting the computers, radio and satellite communications up and running again, after the station had to be closed for the Antarctic winter.  I’m sure Mr Roulston will be happy to engage our students and staff in recalling his adventures.  A great addition to the team at Lipson.

This week saw us welcome 60 students from Lipson Vale Primary as part of Science week.  The event certainly went with a bang!  Students were very excited to get involved with some brilliant experiments and have a taste of the activities available in secondary school life.  Thank you to the Science department for organising this event.

On Thursday we welcomed over 100 students from 10 primary schools braving the weather conditions for a tag rugby festival.  Excellent rugby was played with a fantastic atmosphere and team spirit between teams.  We welcomed Kings school for the first time and it’s lovely to see our Lipson family grow and extend even further.

Also on the sporting front, our under- 14 girls have qualified for the county football finals in April, as a result of coming in the top two in the city.  Well done girls.

Next week we will be supporting Sports Relief, culminating in Sport Mufti/Football Shirt Friday with £1 donations being collected for this worthwhile cause. Thank you very much to PE department for all the work they do to make these fixtures and activities so successful.

I wish you all a lovely weekend.
