Well… this week certainly gave us a taste of summer as the weather reached soaring temperatures but with the addition of some ice lollies and common sense regarding school uniform, we all continued with school as normal.  The weather certainly didn’t stop us hosting the Key Stage 1 sports day from Laira Green Primary school this week –I am always proud to see our Sports ambassadors help co-ordinate these events and ensure fun is had by all.  The time has almost arrived for our own athletics final day which takes place on Monday.

We are preparing for our new year 7 students to arrive with us for their induction days and have a packed schedule for them to experience life at Lipson. Mr Swiggs and Mr Mee have been out visiting the children in their Primary schools to get to know all about them before they join us. Some students have been part of our enhanced transition programme and have had the opportunity to come up and spend a bit of extra time with us to help ease that transition to secondary school. It certainly is lovely meeting our new students and seeing how well they will fit into our school. We recognise that this can be a daunting experience not just for year 6 students but also for their parents which is why parents will be part of the induction days, with a meet the tutor evening to begin that all important relationship with their child’s tutor.

Also, this week we held our Open Afternoon for prospective students and parents. We had an extremely large turnout of interested parents and their children who came to see for themselves how the educational experience would be like at Lipson. Each faculty showcased key themes for their subject and had student books for parents to see how progress is made. Lipson students showcased their work and were real ambassadors for the school as always. It was lovely to see some ex- students return with their own children. We have several other open events in September but we also offer the opportunity for parents to come and have a tour around the school during the working day to understand what the educational experience is like at Lipson before deciding that this will be the right school for their child.

Year 5 from Salisbury Road Primary school joined us on Wednesday for a Science workshop run by Mr Gage. Mr Gage has been working with our local Primary schools this year and each primary school has had a 6 week programme which has ended with a workshop held here in one of our fully equipped Science labs. The excitement and enthusiasm from the students is great to see and we look forward to more fun next week when we host part of their science week activities here.

The exam season is almost complete. Our year 11 and 13 students have handled the exams well and we look forward to celebrating the end of the exams with our year 11 prom and year 13 leavers party over the next few weeks.
