Principal's Blog 9th March 2018

I would like to start this week by thanking all the students and staff for the calm manner in which they evacuated the school last Wednesday following the heavy snow fall.

It is such a rare occurrence for us in Plymouth; I think the photo demonstrates how excited students and staff were!

I would also like to thank families for their understanding and patience during the snow closure days.

As ever, the safety of all was paramount, however, I think we all enjoyed some fun in the snow!

This has been a very busy week with various different performances and visits.  On Thursday Year 8 were treated to a ‘live stream’ performance of the RSC’s Twelfth Night.  The entire year group and their teachers filled the Muse in order to see one of Shakespeare’s comedies come to life.

Complete with programmes, word searches and even Shakespeare Bingo (at the interval, of course), Year 8 enthusiastically embraced the event and all were talking about it afterwards.   Shakespeare himself would have been very proud.

This week, renowned author Kathryn White visited Lipson and delighted our Year 7 and 8 students with an interactive talk based on her thrilling books. Our academy also invited almost 200 primary students from our feeder schools to see Kathryn. It was amazing to see a packed Muse full of enthusiastic faces from Year 5 and 6. The highlight was definitely Kathryn's reading from 'The Beast' - a page-turning novel based around a young boy who sees a crocodile in a quarry in rural England.

A group of our Year 12 & 13 students put on a fabulous, thought provoking production on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the National Theatre Connections festival.  I felt privileged to watch such talented young people and it really reminded me why I love teaching; ensuring we teach our young people how to think and to challenge the status quo and not just accept prevailing ideologies.  Thank you to Mrs Scrivener for co-ordinating the event.

I was thrilled to hear about one of our Year 8 students, Arjun Shrestha, completing his sponsored swim for charity, raising an impressive £485 for St Luke's Hospice and New Life Charity for Disabled children.   Such great dedication and effort to support others.  He should be very proud, I certainly am.

Thank you to everyone for such a fantastic Year 10 Parents' Evening on Thursday.  Attendance was well over 85% and the atmosphere was buzzing with lots of fabulous conversations about learning.  We surveyed lots and lots of parents and carers and were so pleased with the positive feedback that we were given about how happy the students are to be at Lipson and how pleased they are with the quality of teaching and learning.

I was so pleased this week when an excited Mrs Comber (Head of Science) came to tell me that she had secured £6,000 worth of funding for the Science department.  The department will be working with Stimulating Physics Network Partner Schools which is sponsored by the institute of Physics.  The package will include a subject mentor linked to the department. bespoke training on Physics for KS3, KS4 and KS5 for all teaching staff and technicians. Subject champions for KS5 Physics to encourage more girls to participate in A level Physics.  This is a very rare opportunity and one that we are very fortunate to have achieved.

Over the past two weeks, Year 11 have worked very hard on the last round of PPEs. The real summer exams begin in nine weeks but our students are very focused and are attending Study Cafe and revising smartly. Our Easter School timetable will be published soon. It’s important to strike the right healthy balance and many have signed up for the Friday night spin-cycle or relaxation sessions. Their mindfulness booklet will help to make sure they stay healthy in 'mind and body' and do not burn out whilst ensuring revision is having a significant impact. The GCSEpod support materials are fantastic with student revision and parent support materials and revision materials on there. So far we have had over 3800 revision pods viewed by your children.

Have a lovely weekend.
